SCK•CEN - Belgian Nuclear Research Centre


The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre, SCK•CEN, is a foundation of public utility under the tutorial of the Belgian Federal State Secretary in charge of energy. More than 700 employees realize a turnover of 95 M€. Throughout its sixty years of experience SCK•CEN, has earned a reputation as a centre of excellence for research, training and education in the field of peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology and ionising radiation.

SCK•CEN has a long and outstanding tradition in participating in national and international research projects in the domain of nuclear emergency management, radioactive waste disposal, technology assessment and public participation in nuclear decision making, as well as in organising and lecturing in international training courses on these topics and in providing expertise to the Belgian authorities and international bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency. Moreover, SCK•CEN has a long standing research programme concerning the integration of societal aspects into nuclear research, which addresses, among other, the theory and practice of communicating about ionising radiation, public perception and acceptance of ionising radiation risks and stakeholder involvement processes. The mentioned work is performed in the expertise group "Society and Policy support" at the Institute Environment, Health and Safety.

SCK•CEN has been involved in several national and European R&D programmes related to nuclear emergency management (FP6 IP EURANOS, FP5 RODOS MIGRATION, FARMING, DAONEM, FP4 “RODOS, DSSNET, PREPARE), radioactive waste governance (COWAM II, COWAM in PRACTICE, ARGONA) and to socio-economic research on fusion (EFDA-SERF). SCK•CEN coordinated FP5 thematic clusters SAMEN and MOSES and the FP6 project TMT (Triage, monitoring and Treatment), and the FP7 projects DETECT.

SCK•CEN takes the role of coordinator in the EAGLE project.
